This is such a strange topic for me because when I hear about the continued rise of bullying and how it makes children become violent towards themselves and others it really disturbs me. Looking back, there were moments where I was bullied as a kid but it never got to the point of damaging who I was inside. I can understand how that can happen. It has to stop. If you are one of many people who think blogging is just a self indulgent endeavor with no intrinsic value, (not that friends have said that to me..wink, wink.) I give you the work of school teacher Jon Shwartz and his website kidslikesblogs.org. His goal is to get his Elementary Students to create blogs to help express their creative interests to an audience. He wants to use blogs as a portal for students to show their writing and artwork as well as exposing the kids to the digital age and how it can be beneficial to their creative mind. John sets up the blogs and oversees the content..and after viewing the samples that were posted, the effort that was put into the postings and site design is really incredible. Kudos to you John!

Tech Thursday- Mobile apps are getting rated

With close to 700,000 mobile apps floating around in the tech universe, the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) and wireless association CTIA have come up with a rating system to help distinguish what is age appropriate. Utilizing the same rating system hat ESRB has all ready created, Apps will be divided into 6 categories ranging from early childhood to adults only. Considering I just saw my friends two year son play on an I-pad for over an hour, this rating system could not have come soon enough in my opinion.

The National STEM Video Game Challenge is back and it's aim is for young gaming aficionados in middle school, high school and college to come up with original gaming concepts to help young children in the fields of math, technology and science. New to the challenge this years are projects from PBS Kids stream and Sesame Street stream. PBS is looking for math based games for children Pre-k through 4th grade and Sesame Street wants a video game for Pre- k though 1st grade utilizing their characters and footage. I remember when Baby TV came out a few years ago, and thought... now that is a great idea, I can't wait to check out their shows. The problem was, I have never been able too because the station is only available on the Dish Network. Bad Baby! As of late, I have been trying to pare down my TV watching options instead of expanding it, so needless to say I have never seen an episode of Baby TV programming. But that will soon change with the new deal BabyTV has made with Entertainment One and all of the shows will be available to download via I-tunes starting today. Are you saying there are more options to keep your kids glued to the I-pad? Yep! Are they good options for your kids to watch? Yep. See, I didn't have to get Dish Network! Told you.

I was having a bout of a 90's nostalgia, and was listening to Soundgarden's Spoonman. I'm telling you, anytime you can combine hard Seattle grunge rock and spoons...you have to do it. This made me think of the spoon guy. I'm not sure if this is him, but here is Artis The Spoonman performing in Seattle for a classroom of kids. So, it's kind of the same thing!

It's always great to hear about new books aimed for kids finding some success. Though it's not published yet, I have a felling publishers will get a "whiff" of it....Anybody..Ok! Aspiring author Amber C Jones created a Kickstarter campaign for her book "New York, Phew York: A Scratch-N-Sniff Adventure." Here is the description:

Told in rhyming couplets, the story follows a child who comes to New York on a family vacation. The family befriends a hotel concierge, who then leads them on an all-encompassing tour around New York.

Last week she reached her 20,000 dollar goal to make the book into a reality. Congrats to you Amber. We hope your book really stinks...in a good way!

1) Flash mob against bullying: I have to say, the thought of people breaking out in simultaneous choreography is very surreal in some ways. It reminds me of a dream I had of living in a musical theater world...that's a different story. These kids decided to get together and do a flash mob to speak up against bullying in schools. That makes them incredible in all ways.

When I think of Billy Kelly, the image that pops into my head is not a musician. It’s more of a delightfully demented pied piper, who happens to write music. I have absolutely no idea what direction he is going with his musical excursions, but I am ready to follow him to its awesome conclusion. I had a great time hanging out at The Family Garden.

His songs feel like a bunch of his friends got together, hit the record button, and let the fun flag fly. Ditties like Scootdootdoodlydoo and The Happy Happy Whistling song are fun in it’s simplest form. Just wind the tune up, sit back and let it make you smile. Then throw in the inquisitive nature of Why is the Moon Following Me? Followed by the celebration of the never finished world of creation in It’s Close Enough, and you get an album that is thoughtful, whimsical, with nice splash of fruitcake to make it go down the ear tube so nice. What I learned at Kindiefest 2011

Well, it's been about a week since Kindiefest has come to a conclusion and I guess I needed that time to digest all that I have learned and what it means to changing the very nature of the children music industry itself!
One thing at a time...

Lessons learned at Kindiefest 2011

1) This industry is stepping up. Though newer to the game than others, I've taken note over the last year about what direction kids music is heading. It it on the up and up. There is still the financial and marketing restrictions that make this field a difficult road to hoe but the talent level...wow...it is so impressive. From the irreverent musicality of Billy Kelly, to the punk rock sensibility of the Candy Band and The Not-It's, the beautiful effervescence of Tim & the Space Cadets and Aaron Nigel Smith, with a hip hop cherry on top, provided by RhymeZwell. These artists are making themselves heard because of their artistic ability, and it was awesome to behold.

2) Get to know your audience...or as "Mr. Stinky Feet" Jim Cosgrove said, get them to work for you. They are the backbone to any successful artist in kindie music. Your fans will propel you to places you never knew you could perform. They are the lifeblood of your act, and if you cultivate them and reach out to them they will reach out and support you back. If you can do it well, there is no show too small and no audience you can't reach.

3) Cooperate. I feel like I'm riding the coattails of the Sugar Free Allstars and Secret Agent 23 Skidoo with this song

This is the only way kids music artists can have a future. There is not enough media, venues, store space, or time to reach everyone you would desire without...cooperation. Teaming up with other artists not only emboldens the culture, but shows that this field is filled with professionals that should be treated..and paid as such.

4) I need to work on my blogging skills! I truly bow to the alters on Stefan from zooglobble and Jeff from OWTK. These guys love this world and write about it with passion. I want to be a positive voice out there in the field of Kindie and I have to step up my game. So thank you for the motivation guys.

5) The support. Sometimes you think you work in a bubble. You put things out in the Universe, but no one is really listening to you. It felt great to hear from the artists that I have interviewed, who told me they really enjoyed speaking to me, and hope I keep doing more podcasts and blogs. You know what...I will.

Power of ice cream

I am a big proponent of ice cream. I think I share this state of mind with anyone over 3, but that's besides the point. My ice cream interest has been piqued by the Ice Cream People Project an exhibit taking place till January 26th at Kidrobot in Miami Beach. Artist Brian Butler started the project under the simple premise of finding ice cream people similar to the ones he saw on multiple miniature golf courses all over Massachusetts. So he reached out to the world for "proof" of such creatures. The project was born. It begs to ask the question to those who bow down to the ice cream gods, is the answer is yes, would these creatures come looking for us to satisfy their own sweet tooth? What flavor would you be? You can ponder these theories all month long with your little ones...but keep an eye out for anyone with cone legs.
